Anyone who sincerely loves God will desire to walk in His perfect will at all times and in everything. Although in this life we can never attain 100% accuracy as far as living for God is concerned, we can progressively become more yielded to the Holy Spirit who was given to guide and lead us into God's will. The best analogy to use is that of a drunk.

Just before I got born again, I attended a graduation party with a group of friends. I drank alcohol, and I passed out. I regained some consciousness when my friends found me sleeping in the backyard, among some old women who had travelled from the village to attend their grandson's party. With that experience, I know what it means when alcohol is not taken in moderation - it totally possesses a person.

Paul said, "Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine . . . but be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:17-18). What he meant was that if we are going to know and easily flow in God's perfect will, we need to get drunk - not with alcohol, but with His Spirit. The more we imbibe the Spirit, the more He will take control of our lives. And when we get drunk with Him, when He ‘gets to our head', then we lose all ability to walk in the flesh. At that level of Spirit-drunkenness, everything we desire and do shall be the will of God - because the Holy Spirit of truth will have taken total control of us.

How, then, can we get drunk (filled) with the Spirit? The answer is in the Bible. After Paul had told the Ephesians to be filled with the Spirit, he told them how to do it: "speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Ephesians 5:19-20). Simply put, when we constantly celebrate God by continually offering Him the sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name (Hebrews 13:15), we shall be filled with His Spirit. In that state of Spirit-drunkenness, we are set free from being led carnally because the Spirit has gained control of our lives.

In an epistle related to that of the Ephesians, Paul gave us some more detail by which we can be drunk with the Spirit and thereby be governed by Him. "And let the peace of God rule in your hearts . . . be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in your richly . . . teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord" (Colossians 3:15-16). Here, Paul added that the word of Christ should richly dwell in us. Jesus said that His words are spirit (John 6:63). Therefore, if His words are richly dwelling in us, we shall be filled with the Spirit that they are.

So, in order to get drunk with the Spirit, we need to continually speak and sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. We also have to always be thankful. At the same time, we must be full of the word of Christ. There is no way this mixture of drinks can leave us sober; we will be filled with the Spirit and we will walk in God's perfect will in all things.

"Woe to men mighty at drinking wine, Woe to men valiant for mixing intoxicating drink" (Isaiah 5:22). Blessed are we who are constantly filled with the Spirit.

God bless you.
