We really must take advantage of this COVID-19 Lockdown to teach our children the Word of God. These children have been given to us as a stewardship. We are responsible to God, and shall one day give account to Him for how they turn out – good or bad. Therefore, for us Christians, parenting must not be taken lightly.

The Bible says:

“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)

Now, the early part of the month of May is always special for me. My two children were born on the 2nd and 8th of May. On each of these days, I remember with fondness, and with gratefulness to God, the supernatural circumstances leading to their birth in America.

My wife Geraldine and I got married in January 2010. A few months later I dreamt that God was telling us to quickly ‘get’ a child who would be born in America only if the “quickly” was obeyed. He later told us that for the child to be born in the States, (and therefore being an American) was a harvest and reward from Him for my consistent, cheerful and sacrificial sowing or generosity with the not-so-much money I had at that time. That reward of American citizenship, God said, would be used for something great for the child in the years ahead. Many of you know the rest of the story as told in chapter 9 of my book Financial Prosperity: Breaking the Back of Poverty. In a nutshell, after many trials of faith, my sweetheart Eden was born in the States on 8th May 2011.

A year or so after Eden was born, another dream came to me. It too was a message from the Lord that we should quickly ‘get’ another child who would also be born in America only if the “quickly” was obeyed. God told us that this second child would also have American citizenship as a harvest and reward from Him, again because of my consistent, cheerful and sacrificial generosity with the little money I had at that time. Out of that reward, God said, would come something great for this child also in the years ahead. After much more testing of our faith than what we experienced with Eden, sweetheart Abigail was born on 2nd May 2013.

Now, as far as the subject matter of this article– you and I teaching our children the Word of God – is concerned, in this period I am teaching Eden and Abigail about generosity. I really thought that during this week of their birthdays, they should be instructed in God’s command to be cheerful givers because that is why they were blessed of God with American citizenship.

By the way, Abigail fired me some important questions which included: 1) Do you now have little money because you gave away your money? 2) Since you and mummy were not born in America, does it mean that you are not blessed? The answers I gave her are not the subject of this article. I leave it to you to guess my responses.

Please join me and together, let us teach our children that sharing even of the little they have is an instruction from God. More so, let them know, from the Bible, that when they obey that instruction to give, they will please God.

Below are the two scriptures I am using to teach Eden and Abigail about giving and how it blesses God. You too may consider using them with your children.

  1. “But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” (Hebrews 13:16)
  2. “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7)

Our children should be like Timothy who right from childhood was taught the Scriptures which include the commandments to give (and to tithe). As it is written, “From childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures.” (2 Timothy 3:15)

God bless you.
