Eli received a final verdict from God on his sons' lives and his reaction of "letting God be God" cost him the possible reconsiderations those like Hezekiah and David squeezed through, in spite of similarly "dead ends". They knew that if what was responsible was God having mercy on whom He will have mercy then that finality could be appealed, given the accommodating nature of mercy.
