Webale Webale akumalako ebibyo. Etasima ebula agiwa. Those two wonderful Luganda proverbs are enduring lessons on the importance of gratefulness. The first one means that a person who continuously thanks you for what you give them will eventually take all that you have, because you will always feel like giving them more. The second proverb means that a soul that is never grateful lacks one to give to it.

For sure God is going to bless us, just as He has told us. We sowed obedience, we are now due for a harvest of blessings. For this we should thank God even before we see those blessings. Yet it is not only for the coming blessings that we should thank God, but also what He has done in the past. It is very possible that an ever complaining and grumbling attitude, which is a manifestation of a heart that is not grateful, can short-circuit the good plans of God in a person’s life. The best example of this is one we all know: The generation of the Israelites that left Egypt, except Joshua and Caleb, never actually entered the land flowing with milk and honey, all because of complaining. When those Israelites encountered any trial, they complained, forgetting all the trials God had supernaturally delivered them from, and the many blessings He had showered on them. God put up with that complaining for some time, but at a certain point He had enough of it and said, “You will never enter my rest.”

Since we know that “Webale Webale akumalako ebibyo”, and that “Etasima ebula agiwa”, let us be continuously grateful to God for all He has done for us. That way, we shall not in any way short-circuit the blessings that are coming our way in this season.

God bless you.
