Our God is a faithful God. We ought to first learn this in the Bible before we experience it in our personal lives.

The first promise He gave to mankind was that the seed of the woman would crush the head of the serpent. This, as we know, was fulfilled in Jesus on the cross at Calvary: “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:15). Sadly, the race of people – the Jews – through whom Jesus was to come and to whom the numerous prophecies of His coming were given rejected Him. The majority of Israel refused to accept that Jesus was the awaited Saviour: “He came to His own, but His own did not receive Him” (John 1:11).

When Israel did not receive the salvation in Jesus Christ that God had promised them, two things happened consequently: 1) They were banished from their land and subjected to centuries of sufferings in the diaspora, and 2) The promise of salvation that they rejected was given to other people – the Gentiles.

However, Israel as a people did not and will never cease from being a nation before God. For as long as the sun, moon, and stars endure, so will Israel be a chosen people unto God (Jeremiah 31:35-36). They are beloved for the sake of their fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to whom God gave unconditional promises concerning the eternal election of their descendants.

It is true that Israel stumbled when they missed the day when the promise of salvation was fulfilled. However, they were not cast away from God (Romans 11:1-2) to be replaced by Gentiles or the Church. On the contrary, God has scheduled another day of opportunity when all Israel will be saved and their sins taken away (Romans 11:25-26). Why? It is because God is the God of another chance.

This principle of God offering second chances should be of great encouragement to all of us. Just like Israel, we all have promises from God which we did not receive when our faithful God fulfilled them or we simply messed them up in one way or the other. However, because we are the beloved of God in Christ Jesus, He has designated another chance or opportunity for us to receive and experience the initial good He intended for us. Although like Israel, we went through misery and sufferings because we missed our appointed times, God has not cast us away in as far as Him doing us good is concerned – we are still His beloved in Christ Jesus. It is true again, as is the case with Israel, that our promises were given to other people when we did not receive them. However, God is and has always been the God of another chance. We are beloved of Him in Christ Jesus; therefore, He has appointed another day on which He will visit us with that which we missed. We should only make sure that we learn from our past mistakes and pledge not to repeat the very mistakes that made us miss the day of our visitation. Also, we should ask God for eyes to discern the promises when they come around again.

God bless you.
