As Christians we are called to love people, especially our own brethren – the people who like us believe that Jesus is Lord and Saviour. One of the most important ways we are instructed to love our own is by giving to them financially and materially when they are in need and we are in position to help them. Therefore, sharing or giving should always be on our minds, and we should hear a lot more of it from our pulpits.

The Bible says that, “As we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith,” (Galatians 6:10). If we neglect to do good by sharing what we have with our brethren who are in need and who God has instructed us to help, then we are not walking in the love of God. That is why John wrote: “But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?” (1 John 3:17)

We must therefore take giving very seriously; for as we have read, doing so proves that indeed we are walking in love. We mustn’t only be concerned with our own welfare, but we should also look out for the wellbeing of our brothers and sisters in the Lord. That is why Paul, by the Holy Spirit, said, “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:4)

Loving the brethren by sharing with them either our possessions or money has many benefits. The greatest of these benefits is the pleasure it brings God. If we really love God and desire to please Him, then we should seek to excel at giving to His children who He places on our hearts to help. Hence the admonition: “But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” (Hebrews 13:16)

God bless you.
