The purpose of the ministry of Elijah, in whose spirit and power John the Baptist came, is to spare us from the coming wrath of God (Luke 1:16-17). The Lord wants you and I to escape this wrath and help a loved one or stranger to do the same by repenting and receiving Him as Lord and Saviour. He also wants us to tell those who are already born again to bear fruits worthy of repentance. These warnings should help ready us for the imminent return of The Lord.
